The Czech Academy of Sciences is launching a program focused on the biodiversity crisis

Global biodiversity crisis: risks and opportunities for human society is a new five-year interdisciplinary program of the Czech Academy of Sciences, in which seven institutes, including the IMIC CAS, will participate. Laboratory of Environmental Microbiology and Laboratory of Microbial Ecology and Biogeography IMIC CAS will investigate how global changes and climate extremes affect fungal diversity in various ecosystems across the Czech Republic as part of the program.

The goal is to strengthen the role of scientific knowledge in government decision-making and in the public debate on the future stability of the Czech landscape and quality of life.

  • To explore the still unexplored topic of the biodiversity crisis perception. A sociologically based understanding will be essential for targeting communication tools.
  • To analyse time series on the changes in biodiversity of key groups of organisms. Scientists will clearly define the main trends and their causes.
  • To analyse the legal basis for biodiversity protection. The aim is to support the incorporation of effective legal instruments into Czech legislation.
  • To combine knowledge from the humanities and natural sciences into a functional framework. The program will formulate concrete steps to address the biodiversity crisis.

Two IMIC research groups are part of the program: Laboratory of Environmental Microbiology and the Laboratory of Microbial Ecology and Biogeography, which focus on microbial ecology and the role of microorganisms (particularly fungi and bacteria) in the environment.
