Objective of the project:
The MULLEM project investigates the factors underlying multiple cell division by combining comparative transcriptomics, functional genetics, and evolutionary analyses. Time-resolved RNA sequencing in three species of green microalgae and one diatom group outside this clade will identify conserved candidate genes. These will be functionally validated through loss-of-function studies, complementation assays, and live-cell imaging in Chlorella and Chlamydomonas. By identifying the molecular factors that regulate multiple division, the MULLEM project will deepen our understanding of eukaryotic division strategies and open new avenues for harnessing multiple division for sustainable biotechnology. The project will strengthen the principal investigator’s expertise in algal genetics and comparative genomics and provide a solid foundation for a future leadership role in independent research.
