The Protein Technology Center provides comprehensive support for research and applied development in microbiology, molecular biology, and biotechnology. We focus on the taxonomic, growth, and functional characterisation of microbial strains, scale-up cultivation, and cutting-edge protein technologies and industrial biotechnology. In the field, we investigate the biosynthetic capabilities and pathways of engineered and native microbial strains, including bacteria, yeast, and fungi.
Services for Companies and Research Institutions
We specialise in designing and constructing microbial strains with enhanced or novel production traits, as well as developing efficient processes for enzyme production, purification, stabilisation, and functional characterisation. Making use of our facility´s infrastructure, we are able to optimize production from lab-scale and pilot studies to industrial-scale production.
Another important area of study in our group is the application of naturally occurring microorganisms in environmental biotechnology strategies. Our sustainable approach is based on the construction of whole-cell catalysis and immobilized enzyme systems for the biotransformation of natural compounds and, most importantly, for the biodegradation/utilization of xenobiotics. Using OMIC integrative approaches (whole-genome sequencing, proteomic and metabolic/metabolomic analyses), we aim to uncover novel biodegradation pathways and decipher how microorganisms behave.
