Researchers’ Night 2026: How do microorganisms, cells and the immune system communicate with one another?

Communication is not just an exchange of words between people. It takes place constantly within our bodies, between organisms and their environment, and between scientists and the technologies that help them uncover previously unknown connections. Take a look at what the IMIC scientists have prepared for this year’s Researchers’ Night. We greatly appreciate the public’s interest and look forward to seeing you again next year!

This year’s Researchers’ Night took place on Friday 25 September at a number of venues across the Czech Republic, with ‘communication’ as the overarching theme. The Institute of Microbiology of the Czech Academy of Sciences (IMIC CAS) organised a programme for the public at the Academy of Sciences campus in Prague-Krč and at Dobruška Grammar School in eastern Bohemia. The evening was packed with lectures, laboratory tours and presentations on scientific topics – ranging from fungi, bacteria, the microbiome and the human immune system to dangerous toxic substances lurking in everyday items. As part of the lecture series, Miroslav Kolařík (Laboratory of Fungal Genetics and Metabolism) spoke about the diversity and fascinating life strategies of fungi. Petr Kohout (Laboratory of Microorganism Ecology and Biogeography) also gave a lecture on fungi, but he focused on the symbiotic relationship between plants and so-called mycorrhizal fungi. The evening was hosted by Associate Professor Kateřina Valentová.

A big thank you goes to the IMIC laboratories – to the researchers, students and volunteers – for their fantastic programme, and to all the visitors who came to see us during the Researchers’ Night!

We greatly appreciate the public’s interest and look forward to seeing you again next year! We welcomed around 600 visitors in Prague and just under 300 in Dobruška.
