For students
In cooperation with university departments, many of our scientists also lecture at universities in bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral programs. We offer professional internships to university students so that they can participate in research projects.

FAQ
The best starting point is to contact the laboratory involved in the research in which you would like to participate. You can start in the listed topics section (mainly applies to dissertations) with offers from laboratories that are currently looking for students. However, do not be discouraged if you do not find an offer suitable for you. Go through the information about the individual laboratories on the website of the Institute of Microbiology, and if the scientific topic of one of the laboratories interests you, do not hesitate to contact the head of the laboratory or another employee directly. You will agree on the next course of action with him.
To prepare any formal student thesis, you must be (or become) a student at one of the Czech (or foreign) universities. The specific agreement between the university and the Institute of Microbiology is individual – it depends on the university, the type of student work, whether you are already studying or just planning to start your studies. Therefore, consult directly with the head of the laboratory you have chosen about the appropriate procedure. Do not forget that the start of studies at the university is usually preceded by an admissions procedure, for which you must apply in time.
Your obligations arise primarily from the agreement with the head of the laboratory in which you will work. This applies both to the progress of your student work and to any other work activities. If you will have a full-time job, you are obliged to comply with all valid regulations of the MBÚ, in particular attendance at the workplace according to the amount of the full-time job. Doctoral students are also expected to attend the institute’s scientific seminars, which take place on Friday mornings, to the extent possible.
Doctoral students receive a scholarship from their faculties. Their amount is different at each faculty and may depend on the year in which you study, on pedagogical and publication activity or on participation in scientific conferences. Working hours at the Institute of Microbiology must always be agreed with the head of your laboratory – its amount depends on the capabilities of the laboratory and the specific agreement. Doctoral students usually get 50-100% of the time, while bachelor and master’s students, due to the limited time capacity, usually get a symbolic 5-20% of the time.
The biggest benefit is without a doubt the opportunity to prepare a student (bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral) thesis in a modern scientific institution and optimally start your professional career. In addition, a number of other benefits await you:
Incentive reward for scientific performance and publication activity
In the event that the results of your work in the laboratory succeed in being published in a publication where you will be the first author, the director of the Institute of Microbiology will grant you a financial bonus in the amount of the impact factor of the scientific journal multiplied by the amount of CZK 1,000 (the amount of impact factors most often varies according to the prestige of the journal between 1 and 10). The best diploma and dissertation theses and scientific teams as a whole are also regularly rewarded for excellent publication output.
Meal plan flat rate
If you work full-time at the Institute of Microbiology, you will be entitled to a meal plan in the amount of CZK 53 per day, i.e. for a worked shift that lasts at least 3 hours.
Foreign language courses
As an employee of the Institute of Microbiology, you can take very financially advantageous foreign language courses, especially English (general and professional English, exam courses, Czech language courses for foreigners). Language courses take place in the center of Prague near Masaryk railway station (Language Study Office of the Institute for the Czech Language AVČR, Hybernská 8/1000, 110 00 Prague 1); you can find more information on the website www.langdpt.cas.cz. In addition, English language courses are also held at the Krč campus at the Institute of Molecular Genetics. They can be visited by individual arrangement.
Other employee benefits
If you work at the Institute of Microbiology for more than 1 year with at least 50% full-time employment, you will be entitled to one of the following benefits according to your choice: (1) employer’s contribution to pension insurance, (2) Flexi Pass – Pluxee vouchers, (3) Multisport card – multisport.cz
Sports enjoyment
The Krk campus has a gym and squash – www.img.cas.cz/dalsi-zarizeni/sportovni-zarizeni/ and an outdoor field with an artificial surface (football, basketball, volleyball)
Am I entitled to accommodation if I am not from Prague?
As a university student, you can apply for a dormitory according to the offer of your university. A number of students solve their accommodation by renting a private apartment. Accommodation in the dormitory of the Institute of Microbiology is primarily intended for foreign workers and is provided only exceptionally to students from the Czech Republic.
Open Science
Open Science is an initiative aimed at supporting talented secondary school students who are interested in science and research and have the opportunity to spend a year as scientists at the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic. Thanks to scientific internships, high school students can participate in top scientific research and thus gain valuable experience with scientific work and practice.
Open Science internships are also held at the Institute of Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic. Here, students can learn how science is done and participate in specific scientific projects under the direct guidance of experienced scientists. Their results often win awards in various student competitions.
